On April 21-22, 2016 the International Conference “Decentralisation of power – Contemporary Challenges and Opportunities” was held in Lviv. According to organizers, the conference was a pilot project for the development of friendly relations between Ukraine and Germany, specifically on the community level.
It should be noted that for several years, Lviv has been working with Germany to realize various joint initiatives. One such project is the commemorative “Space of Synagogues: Jewish history, common heritage and responsibility” that the Lviv city council is realizing in cooperation with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
The Parliamentary Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, Bundestag Deputy Hans-Joachim Fuchtel participated in the conference and visited projects in Lviv that are co-financed by the German government. Among them was the “Space of Synagogues.” There Mr. Fuchtel met with the Director of the Historical Protection Society of the Lviv City Council, Liliya Onyshchenko, who explained the main idea behind the project and showed him the work that had been completed to date.
The Bundestag Deputy also met with Borys Dorfman, a well-known community activist who is also the oldest Jewish resident of our city at the “Space of Synagogues” site. Mr. Dorfman expressed his endorsement to the representative of the German government for their support of commemorative projects on sites associated with Lviv’s Jewish history.
Parliamentary Secretary to the Federal Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Hans-Joachim Fuchtel was impressed by the city tour. He also thanked the organizers of the “Space of Synagogues” for the high quality of work performed.
